Medieval European physicians and apothecaries relied heavily on these texts and supplemented them with local herbal traditions, recommending preparations derived from willow bark, juniper, and various plants long understood to reduce pain and swelling, though without any modern understanding of the mechanisms involved.

The early modern period brought significant changes in anatomical knowledge but slower progress in understanding arthritis specifically. Thomas Sydenham, the 17th-century English physician sometimes called the English Hippocrates, produced one of the most celebrated early clinical descriptions of gout, drawing in part on his own personal experience with the disease. Sydenham distinguished gout carefully from other joint complaints, noting its patterns, its tendency to affect wealthy men, and its association with dietary excess, and his vivid accounts remained influential for generations.

The 19th century brought important conceptual advances, as Alfred Baring Garrod demonstrated in the 1840s and 1850s that elevated uric acid in the blood was associated with gout, providing the first chemical explanation for a specific arthritic condition and representing a watershed moment in the disease's history. Around the same time, physicians began distinguishing rheumatoid arthritis as a separate condition from gout and osteoarthritis, a process formalized in part through the work of Archibald Garrod, Alfred's son, in the early 20th century. Jean-Martin Charcot contributed to the classification of joint diseases through his meticulous clinical observations in Paris, helping to separate neurogenic joint destruction from other arthritic presentations and advancing the broader project of nosological clarity that characterized 19th-century medicine.
