French and British troops returning from Egypt carried the disease back to Europe, where it spread through military hospitals and subsequently into civilian populations. They initially interpreted these inclusions as evidence of a protozoan parasite and named the hypothetical organism Chlamydozoa, drawing on the Greek word for cloak because the inclusion appeared to envelope the cell nucleus.

The question of whether the agent causing trachoma was the same organism responsible for certain genitourinary infections occupied researchers through the early and middle decades of the twentieth century. The development of cell culture techniques in the 1950s and 1960s finally allowed investigators to isolate and propagate the organism in laboratory conditions. By the 1960s, researchers including T'ang Fei-fan in China and a team at the University of Illinois had conclusively established that the organism occupied a unique biological category, neither a true bacterium in the classical sense nor a virus, and the genus Chlamydia was formally established to accommodate it.
