Snow's methodical mapping of cases and his door-to-door interviews with residents represented a landmark in epidemiological method, and his eventual persuasion of local authorities to remove the handle from the pump has been celebrated ever since as a founding moment of modern public health. Public alarm over the disease's repeated urban devastation served as a powerful political catalyst for the construction of modern sewage systems and clean water infrastructure in London, Paris, Hamburg, and New York, reshaping the built environment of industrial cities in ways that public health advocates had been unable to achieve through purely rational argument.
