In ancient Greece and Rome, attitudes were more varied and often less reverential. Greek physicians working within the humoral tradition attributed short stature to an excess of cold and moist humors, which were thought to impede normal growth and development. Aristotle wrote about anomalies of growth in his biological treatises and speculated on how nourishment distributed through the body might fail to reach the extremities adequately. The scientific transformation began in earnest in the nineteenth century, as anatomists and pathologists began examining skeletal remains and comparing the features of different individuals with short stature, recognizing that not all cases were alike. The French pathologist and anthropologist Paul Broca contributed to discussions of skeletal abnormalities, and later in the century, as the emerging discipline of endocrinology identified the pituitary gland as a regulator of bodily growth, physicians began distinguishing between forms of dwarfism caused by skeletal abnormalities and those associated with hormonal deficiencies.
