British physician Samuel Orton, working in the 1920s and 1930s, studied children with marked difficulties in reading and writing and proposed neurological explanations rooted in cerebral dominance theory. Though his specific theories were later revised, Orton's work was instrumental in moving childhood writing difficulties from the realm of moral failing or laziness into medical and educational consideration.
