His meticulous drawings and written descriptions, communicated to the Royal Society of London, constituted the first recorded observation of what would eventually be identified as Giardia lamblia. Leeuwenhoek himself did not connect his observation to human disease; he regarded the creatures with scientific curiosity rather than medical alarm, and the significance of his discovery was not immediately appreciated by the broader medical community.

For nearly two centuries after Leeuwenhoek's observation, the organism he had glimpsed remained a scientific curiosity rather than a recognized pathogen. Physicians and natural philosophers debated whether such tiny creatures could truly cause illness in humans, as the germ theory of disease had not yet taken hold. The organism received its formal scientific classification in the nineteenth century. The Czech physician Vilem Dusan Lambl provided a more detailed description of the parasite in 1859, describing its distinctive pear shape and flagella after observing it in the intestinal contents of children. In recognition of his contribution, the organism was for many years called Lamblia intestinalis in parts of Europe. The French biologist Alfred Mathieu Giard, working later in the nineteenth century, also contributed substantially to the scientific understanding of flagellate protozoa, and the genus Giardia was eventually named in his honor, creating a taxonomic legacy that persisted through subsequent generations of parasitologists.

The late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries brought increasing recognition that Giardia could be found in water supplies, and public health investigators began connecting the organism to outbreaks of intestinal illness in communities sharing common water sources. This work unfolded alongside the broader sanitary reform movement, as municipal authorities across Europe and North America invested in filtration and purification systems. Researchers of this era debated vigorously whether Giardia was truly pathogenic or merely a commensal organism, a controversy that persisted for decades and shaped how the medical community studied and prioritized waterborne parasites throughout the early twentieth century.
