Historical Narrative

Among the earliest suspected references to anthrax are passages in the Hebrew Bible, particularly descriptions within the Book of Exodus of a plague that devastated Egyptian livestock, which some historians have interpreted as consistent with what later generations would call anthrax. Ancient Hindu texts from roughly 700 BCE also contain passages describing a disease of cattle and humans that scholars have since associated with the illness. Roman writers including Virgil and Ovid described episodes of catastrophic livestock death across the Italian countryside that bear the hallmarks of anthrax outbreaks, with Virgil's Georgics offering some of the most vivid ancient accounts of such agricultural catastrophe.

Throughout the medieval period, anthrax was known across Europe by a variety of names that reflected its most visible features. The term 'malignant pustule' described the characteristic skin lesion that appeared in those who handled infected animals, while 'woolsorter's disease' became a common name in England during the industrial era, reflecting how workers in the wool and hide trades frequently encountered the illness through their occupations. European peasant communities often interpreted outbreaks as divine punishment or the work of malevolent spirits, and folk remedies varied widely across regions with little coherent understanding of cause.

The scientific transformation in understanding anthrax began in earnest during the mid-nineteenth century. In 1850, the French physician Casimir Davaine and his colleague Pierre Rayer observed rod-shaped bodies in the blood of animals that had died of anthrax, though they did not yet fully interpret the significance of what they had found. It was Robert Koch, the German physician and microbiologist, who in 1876 delivered the decisive breakthrough. Working in a modest laboratory in Wollstein, Koch cultured Bacillus anthracis in isolation, traced its complete life cycle, and demonstrated experimentally that this specific bacterium was the sole cause of anthrax. His meticulous methodology in doing so established what would become known as Koch's Postulates, a framework for proving that a specific microorganism causes a specific disease, a set of logical principles that shaped the entire future of infectious disease research.

Louis Pasteur, the French chemist and microbiologist, added another celebrated chapter to anthrax history in 1881 with his dramatic public demonstration at Pouilly-le-Fort. Before a skeptical audience of scientists, farmers, and journalists, Pasteur vaccinated a group of sheep against anthrax using an attenuated bacterial preparation and then exposed both vaccinated and unvaccinated animals to virulent anthrax bacilli. The vaccinated animals survived while the control group perished, making the experiment one of the most theatrically persuasive moments in the history of medicine and cementing the practical promise of vaccination science.

Anthrax also holds a grim place in the history of biological warfare research, as military powers in the early twentieth century investigated its potential as a weapon, a chapter that drove international treaties and ethical debates about the boundaries of scientific application. The disease's long history — from ancient livestock plagues to foundational laboratory experiments — made it one of the most studied infectious conditions of the modern scientific era.
