Rabies is one of the oldest and most universally feared diseases in recorded human history, described in medical and legal texts from ancient Mesopotamia and repeatedly referenced in Greek, Roman, and medieval European sources. For most of recorded history, an animal bite followed by the development of the disease was understood to be an almost certain death sentence, and the cultural terror surrounding it influenced everything from mythology to legal codes governing animal ownership. The development of a successful preventive treatment by Louis Pasteur in 1885 represented one of the most celebrated moments in the history of medicine.
Historical Narrative
The earliest known written reference to rabies appears in the Eshnunna law code of ancient Mesopotamia, dating to approximately 1930 BCE. This legal document prescribed penalties for dog owners whose animals bit others and subsequently caused illness or death, suggesting that ancient Mesopotamian society understood the lethal potential of bites from afflicted animals even without any concept of infectious agents. Ancient Mesopotamian physicians also described the illness in medical tablets, associating it explicitly with dogs.
In ancient Greece, rabies was well known to physicians and natural historians. Aristotle wrote accurately about the transmission of the disease between animals in his Historia Animalium, though he incorrectly believed that humans could not contract it from dog bites. Later Greek physicians corrected this misunderstanding, and the Roman medical writer Aulus Cornelius Celsus, writing in the first century CE, provided detailed accounts of the disease and advocated for wound cauterization and various herbal treatments applied at the bite site, practices that persisted in modified forms for centuries. The Roman scholar Pliny the Elder recommended an elaborate series of animal-derived remedies, none effective, reflecting the desperation that rabies inspired in physicians who had no reliable response to offer.
Medieval European understanding of rabies existed in a complex interplay between medical tradition and religious belief. Bite victims were sometimes sent on pilgrimages to shrines of saints associated with protection against the disease, most notably Saint Hubert of Belgium, the patron saint of hunters. A ritual known as the 'thread of Saint Hubert' involved inserting a thread from the saint's vestments into an incision at the bite wound, a practice that persisted in parts of rural Europe into the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
Scientific investigation of rabies accelerated significantly in the eighteenth century. The Italian physician Girolamo Fracastoro, writing in the sixteenth century, had already proposed that rabies spread through a contagious 'seed' transmitted in saliva, anticipating germ theory by three centuries. Later researchers in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries attempted to produce animal models of the disease, and by the mid-nineteenth century it was well established that the disease could be reliably transmitted between laboratory animals through saliva inoculation.
Louis Pasteur and his collaborators, particularly Émile Roux, undertook systematic research into rabies beginning in the early 1880s. Working at the École Normale Supérieure in Paris, they developed methods to attenuate the infectious agent by passing it repeatedly through rabbit nervous tissue and then drying the resulting spinal cord material. On July 6, 1885, Pasteur administered this preparation to nine-year-old Joseph Meister, who had been severely bitten by a rabid dog. Meister survived, and when the case was reported to the French Academy of Sciences, it generated international sensation. Within months, victims were traveling to Paris from across Europe and the Americas to receive the treatment. The Pasteur Institute was founded in 1888 in large part to administer this work, and it became one of the world's first dedicated biomedical research institutions. Pasteur never identified a specific microorganism responsible for rabies, as the causative agent was a virus too small for nineteenth-century microscopes to resolve, but his practical success made this a secondary concern in the eyes of a grateful public.
