Few diseases have shaped human history as profoundly as tuberculosis. Archaeological evidence of characteristic bone damage consistent with the disease has been identified in Egyptian mummies dating to approximately 2400 BCE, and similar skeletal findings have emerged from prehistoric European burial sites, suggesting the illness predates written records by millennia.

In ancient Greece, the physician Hippocrates described a wasting condition he called 'phthisis,' derived from the Greek word meaning to waste away or decay. He observed that it was the most widespread fatal illness of his era and believed it arose from an imbalance of the body's four humors, particularly an excess of phlegm. Greek physicians of his tradition generally considered phthisis hereditary in nature, a view that would persist in various forms for nearly two thousand years.

Ancient Indian medical texts, including the Charaka Samhita composed roughly in the first millennium BCE, also documented a recognizable wasting illness and attributed it in part to excessive physical exertion and poor diet, while associating it with weakness of the chest. The disease held such dread in ancient Hindu society that it was sometimes called 'king of diseases.'

Through the medieval period in Europe, tuberculosis was intertwined with royal ritual in a striking way. The practice known as the 'royal touch' held that the monarchs of England and France possessed divine power to cure a form of tuberculosis affecting the lymph nodes of the neck, historically called scrofula. English and French kings formally performed this ceremony for centuries, with crowds of afflicted subjects traveling great distances to receive the monarch's hand upon their skin. The practice continued well into the eighteenth century.

The Romantic era of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries witnessed a curious cultural transformation of tuberculosis in Western Europe. The pale, thin, feverish appearance associated with the illness became aestheticized in literary and artistic circles, seen as a mark of sensitivity, genius, and poetic temperament. Poets, painters, and composers who suffered from it — including John Keats, Frédéric Chopin, and later figures in the arts — were sometimes romanticized rather than pitied. This cultural framing obscured the disease's devastating mortality for decades.

The scientific unraveling of tuberculosis began in earnest during the nineteenth century. The French physician René Laennec, who invented the stethoscope in 1816, contributed significantly to understanding the pathological changes the disease produced in the lungs, recognizing that previously described conditions like phthisis, scrofula, and consumption were likely manifestations of the same underlying illness.

The decisive historical turning point came on March 24, 1882, when the German physician Robert Koch announced to the Berlin Physiological Society that he had identified the specific bacterium responsible for tuberculosis, Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Koch's meticulous laboratory methodology, including his use of staining techniques and animal experiments, transformed the disease from a mysterious hereditary curse into a knowable, identifiable biological entity. This announcement is now commemorated annually as World Tuberculosis Day. Koch later received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1905 for this and related work, marking one of the foundational moments in the history of germ theory.
