The pandemic of 1580 was among the first to be documented across multiple continents in enough detail to allow historians to trace its geographic spread, and European physicians of that era noted how the illness moved from region to region in ways that seemed to follow trade and travel routes. This observation subtly challenged pure miasmatic theory, though physicians lacked any alternative explanatory framework and continued to invoke corrupted air.

The pandemic winters of 1729 to 1730 and 1781 to 1782 further expanded the documentary record, with physicians in England, France, and Russia publishing accounts that began to recognize seasonal patterns and the particular vulnerability of the elderly and the very young. In 1933, British researchers Wilson Smith, Christopher Andrewes, and Patrick Laidlaw successfully isolated the influenza virus from human patients, transmitting it to ferrets and demonstrating its viral nature. This achievement placed influenza within the emerging science of virology and opened pathways for subsequent work on immunity and vaccine development. The identification of distinct influenza virus types in subsequent decades built upon Smith and colleagues' foundational isolation, completing the transition from a condition explained by stars and bad air to one understood within the framework of infectious disease science.
