Simon Flexner, working at the Rockefeller Institute, developed an antimeningococcal serum in the first decade of the 1900s that reduced mortality in documented cases, representing a landmark moment in the history of infectious disease treatment. His work demonstrated that targeted biological agents could alter the course of a previously almost universally fatal illness.

Throughout the World War I and II eras, outbreaks among military populations spurred intensified research into bacterial meningitis, driving advances in understanding transmission patterns and epidemic control within confined settings. Epidemiologists of this period mapped outbreak geography and identified crowding as a major factor in the disease's historical spread through armies and institutions.
