He described the tremors, salivation, tooth loss, and mental deterioration that characterized chronic exposure, attributing these to the penetrating and volatile nature of the metal's particles entering the body.

In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, hatters who used mercury nitrate in the felting process developed a recognizable constellation of neurological and psychological disturbances, giving rise to the cultural association captured in the phrase 'mad as a hatter.' Industrial physicians began documenting these cases systematically, contributing to a growing body of occupational toxicology literature. By the nineteenth century, researchers such as Alfred Swaine Taylor in Britain were incorporating mercury poisoning into formal toxicological texts, helping to establish it as a recognized category of chemical injury with identifiable patterns of harm that could be traced to specific exposures.
