Almost simultaneously, and independently, American researchers Herald Roe Cox and Gordon Davis at the Rocky Mountain Laboratory in Hamilton, Montana, were investigating febrile illness in the region and isolating organisms from ticks. Cox succeeded in culturing what proved to be the same organism that Burnet had encountered on the opposite side of the world, though neither group knew initially of the other's parallel progress. The organism was subsequently named Coxiella burnetii in recognition of both scientists' contributions, an act of nomenclatural diplomacy that acknowledged the transatlantic duplication of discovery.

Early investigators were struck by the agent's unusual resilience compared to other rickettsiae. Laboratory workers and researchers who handled infected materials in the late 1930s and 1940s frequently contracted the illness themselves, and several research facilities experienced outbreaks among their own staff, making Q fever simultaneously the object of investigation and a persistent hazard of that very investigation. These laboratory-acquired infections sharpened awareness of the agent's capacity to spread without the tick vectors associated with classical rickettsial diseases, forcing a revision of assumptions about transmission routes.

During the Second World War, Q fever attracted military medical attention as cases appeared among troops in Europe and the Mediterranean theater. Military physicians and epidemiologists compiled case series from Italy, Greece, and North Africa, attempting to characterize the illness's clinical course and determine its distribution in livestock populations, since animal reservoirs had been implicated in transmission. This wartime experience vastly expanded the geographic scope of documented cases and brought substantial new research resources to bear.

In the postwar decades, serological tools developed by researchers in the United States and Europe allowed retrospective studies linking outbreaks to specific animal contact, establishing that cattle, sheep, and goats served as principal reservoir hosts in the transmission chains investigators had long suspected.
