By the eighteenth century, European physicians were debating whether the disease could be treated with mercury, arsenic compounds, or elaborate botanical preparations. Various physicians advocated cold water immersion, purging, and bleeding according to the dominant humoral framework of the era. None of these interventions altered the outcome for patients who had already developed symptoms.
The transformative moment in rabies history arrived in the nineteenth century through the work of Louis Pasteur and his colleagues Émile Roux and Charles Chamberland. Working in Paris, Pasteur's laboratory developed an attenuated spinal cord preparation from infected rabbits, experimenting first on dogs. In 1885, Pasteur administered his experimental vaccine to nine-year-old Joseph Meister, a boy who had suffered severe bites from a rabid dog. Meister survived, and the event became a defining episode in the history of medicine, demonstrating for the first time that a fatal infectious disease could be interrupted after exposure had already occurred.
