Gregg noticed an unusual cluster of infants with congenital cataracts in his practice and, through careful case history investigation, identified that their mothers had contracted rubella during early pregnancy. A major global epidemic of rubella in 1962 and 1963 affected hundreds of thousands of people across the United States and internationally, resulting in a wave of infants born with serious disabilities and driving urgent calls for the development of a preventive vaccine.
Virologists Thomas Huckle Weller and Franklin Allen Neva successfully isolated the rubella virus in 1962, a crucial technical achievement that made vaccine development possible. Harry Martin Meyer Jr. and Paul Douglas Parkman also independently isolated the virus that same year. These isolation efforts paved the way for vaccine development programs in the 1960s, with several research groups competing to produce a viable immunizing agent.
