The story of toxoplasmosis began in 1908 when French researchers Charles Nicolle and Louis Manceaux, working at the Pasteur Institute in Tunis, discovered a crescent-shaped protozoan organism in the tissues of a small North African rodent called the gundi. Simultaneously and independently, the Brazilian scientist Alfonso Splendore identified the same organism in rabbits in São Paulo. Nicolle and Manceaux named the new parasite Toxoplasma gondii, deriving the genus name from the Greek word for bow or arc, describing the organism's distinctive curved shape, and the species name from the gundi in which it was first observed.

For the first several decades after its discovery, Toxoplasma gondii was regarded primarily as a curiosity of veterinary and parasitological interest. Researchers documented its presence in a wide range of warm-blooded animals, but the parasite's relationship to human disease remained poorly understood. The assumption in early parasitology circles was that humans were largely incidental hosts with little clinical consequence.

The first recognized human case came in 1923 when Czech physician Josef Janků described the case of an infant who had died with unusual eye pathology, though the connection to Toxoplasma was only made retrospectively by later researchers. A clearer picture of human infection began to emerge in 1939 when American physicians Albert Sabin and Peter Olitsky, working at the Rockefeller Institute, isolated Toxoplasma from an infant who had died of encephalitis and eye disease. This landmark case helped establish that the parasite could cause serious disease in newborns and focused attention on what became known as congenital toxoplasmosis.

Throughout the 1940s and 1950s, Sabin continued to be a towering figure in toxoplasmosis research, developing serological tests that allowed physicians to detect prior exposure to the parasite in human populations. These studies revealed that a surprisingly large proportion of adult populations in various countries had serological evidence of past infection, suggesting that human exposure was far more common than serious disease would imply. This discrepancy between widespread exposure and relatively rare severe illness became a central puzzle that drove further investigation.

The question of how the parasite completed its life cycle and spread between hosts remained unresolved for decades. It was not until the late 1960s that researchers including William Hutchison, Jitender Dubey, and colleagues working in the United Kingdom and United States discovered that the domestic cat served as the definitive host in which the parasite underwent sexual reproduction. Cats shed infectious oocysts in their feces, and this discovery fundamentally reframed understanding of how the parasite circulated through both animal and human populations.

The mid-twentieth century also saw growing appreciation for the role of undercooked meat as a vehicle for transmission, as researchers demonstrated that tissue cysts forming in the muscles of infected livestock could transmit infection when consumed. French researchers made significant contributions to understanding the epidemiology of the parasite in European livestock populations during this period.

By the 1980s, toxoplasmosis attracted renewed and urgent scientific attention in the context of immunocompromised patients, as clinicians encountered severe forms of the disease that illuminated how the parasite could persist latently in tissues for years after initial infection. This chapter of the disease's history prompted intensive research into the parasite's biology and reshaped the historical narrative of toxoplasmosis from a relatively obscure parasitological finding into a subject of broad biomedical importance.
